Mentor Training Institute

The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s Mentor Program increases opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities underrepresented among registered nurses.

This course prepares mentors to effectively support the growth and development of a mentee.  Participants explore the role and expectations of a mentor and develops skills that empowers the mentee to set goals, develop networks and identify resources that will foster their success.

What Mentors Do:

  • Serve as a role model and provide guidance
  • Create a positive mentoring relationship with open communication
  • Help mentee identify problems/barriers and lead mentee in problem-solving
  • Offer constructive feedback in a supportive way
  • Refer mentee to other professional resources as necessary
  • Acknowledge positive behavior and outcomes
  • Support mentee through graduation & job placement
The Center recruits experienced clinical nurses with a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing to participate in this year long professional development experience. This program provides training and support activities for participants to gain the skills and tools necessary to effectively mentor diverse nursing students.

How to sign up for the program:

  • Please register for the the program HERE
  • Complete the matching QUESTIONNAIRE that helps us match you with a mentee.
  • Both are required to enroll in the program.

Mentor Participation Guidelines

  • Passion for helping students succeed.
  • Ethnically/racially diverse clinical nurses are preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical experience
  • Attendance in two-day MTI workshop
  • Complete Mentor Application prior to workshop
  • Laptop/desktop access
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing or higher.
  • Current unencumbered nursing license in good standing.
  • Commitment to work with a mentee:
    • A minimum of 1 year
    • Meet for at least 60 minutes/month
    • Participate in coaching calls as required by the program
