Rural Nurse Practitioner Behavioral Health Program
Integrated Care Advisory Panel
An advisory group of experienced psychiatric providers from Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming
The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence developed a fellowship program to support nurse practitioners living in rural communities through obtaining their certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP). This is a “Grow Your Own” model where the recipients are NPs already embedded in the rural community where they plan to practice. Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceutical Foundations fund this grant.
The Gap
Many of the PMHNPs come from a primary care background. They need help to integrate their patient's behavioral health care with their primary healthcare thus allowing a more holistic and integrated level of care. There needs to be support available to mentor PMHNPs both during school and as newly dual-certified providers as they begin integrating behavioral health into their practice and community.
The Solution
The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence is creating an advisory group of experienced psychiatric providers from Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, who are behavioral health integrated specialists. This advisory group is one element of the grant award Fellows receive, more information can be found here. Live learning and discussion sessions will be held four times between May 2024 and August 2025 where advisory members will be present to teach and answer questions the Fellows have.
